Our Story

Our History

OLHC Logo (1).jpg

Our Lady Help of Christians School has a proud and enduring history of providing quality Catholic education to generations of students in our local community.

The school was originally established in 1911 on Barkly Street and relocated to its current site alongside the Church in 1939, under the leadership of Sr. Xavier. As enrolments grew, a second campus was opened in 1961 at the Holy Family Parish School on Nicholson Street, where Prep to Year 2 students were taught, while Years 3 to 6 remained at the main site. With changing demographics over time, the Holy Family campus eventually closed and all students were brought together on the current site.

The grounds themselves carry a rich local history, the land once served as a quarry in the late 19th century. This unique heritage is still reflected in the lower levels of the playground, which provide both a quiet buffer from nearby traffic and a distinctive play space for students.

Over the decades, the school has continued to grow and evolve. Significant developments include:

  • 1975: Construction of a new library, classrooms, and learning areas to meet the needs of a growing student population.

  • 1980s: Addition of a new administration area on Miller Street, creating a central hub for staff and visitors.

  • 2009: Major refurbishment of the administration area, introducing a modern and welcoming reception and staffroom.

  • 2011 Opening of the Senior School Building and Centenary Centre by Bishop Tim Costelloe.

  • 2017: Development of the Western playground and running track, offering students expanded opportunities for play and physical activity.

  • 2024: Refurbishment of the Library and STEM Hub, creating a contemporary, flexible learning environment designed to inspire innovation, curiosity and collaboration.

Today, Our Lady Help of Christians School continues to honour its rich traditions while embracing the future, providing a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that reflects the needs and aspirations of all learners.
